Prague, The tower of Charles Bridge

The Old Town Bridge Tower resembles the Powder Tower and was once part of the same city fortification system. For a small fee you can climb to the rib vaulted viewing room and the walkway around the very top, for perfect views of Charles Bridge, Clementinum and more. Only one side of the tower still has original decorations on it: patron saint Vitus flanked by two kings: Charles IV on the left and Wenceslas IV on the right. Above them are Saint Sigismund and Saint Vojtech. Underneath it you see the Bohemian coat of arms and the kingfisher, symbol of King Wenceslas IV. The original decorations were created by Peter Parler in the 14th century. He was also chief architect of St Vitus Cathedral. The next generation was crafted from low-grade artificial rock in the 1870s, and they were corroding fast. In 2006 new replacements to match the originals were placed on the bridge, though their newness makes them stand out a ghostly white compared to the rest of the gothic tower. They just need a hundred years or so to accumulate smog and weather damage.
